Title - walks and cycle rides

A cycle through Nelson country

Lord Nelson
Lord Nelson was born at Burnham Thorpe

DISTANCE: 22 miles. This route is in the most northerly part of Norfolk along a coastline that keeps its distance from the sea. Wells-next-the-Sea is no longer quite as close to the sea as its name suggests, but the nautical theme is constantly reinforced by the frequent reminders of Lord Nelson, who was born at Burnham Thorpe. Little Walsingham introduces a completely different culture, for its shrine is famous among pilgrims.

MAP: OS Landranger 132 North West Norfolk (grid ref 916438).

STARTING POINT: Wells-next-the Sea, on the A149 about 10 miles north of Fakenham. Be prepared for a few hills once you are away from the coast. The B1105 towards Burnham Market runs right next to the barhour and, from a position facing the sea, turn left onto it. After a mile, the road joins the A149 at a sharp bend. Turn right and ride for 1.5 miles to The Victoria pub at the entrance to Holkham Hall.

Turn left into the road that leads to the hall. Go under an arch and into Holkham Park. Follow the road round past the front of the house and along one end of the lake,. Keep going and take the right-hand fork when the road divides. Ignore the next turning to the left but keep going to the back exit from the hall grounds after about 1.5 miles. Cross the lane to rejoin the B1155, turning left.

Keep going for about two miles to Burnham Overy Town. Shortly after passing the church on your right, turn right at the T-junction onto a minor road to Burnham Overy Staithe.
