Jackson Williams
Williams - preparing for his star fight

Amir Khan action for Jackson

by Bob Carter
Norwich boxer Jackson Williams is to face the sport's brightest new star, Amir Khan, at London's ExCeL Arena on Saturday 25 February, 2006 in a bout which will be screened on ITV.

"The biggest fight I've ever been in," is Norwich boxer Jackson Williams' summing up of his bout against light welterweight boxing sensation Amir Khan.

It will be Olympic silver medallist Khan's sixth professional fight and his record so far speaks for itself: five fights, five wins, and one bout going the distance.

The underdog

The local fighter - dubbed 'Action' Jackson - has a record which reads 12 wins in 15 fights. He knows he is not the favourite come 25 February.

"That’s all right, I've been an underdog before and I’m not afraid of that," said the 24-year-old.

"Some people say I'm not a good puncher, that Jacko doesn't knock people out in his fights, but I am a big puncher, I know I can punch.

"People say this isn't the right fight for me with Amir Khan, people can think what they like. They offered me the fight and I took it," he added.

Williams' biggest crowd to date was the 3,000 people gathered at Norwich City’s ground last September when he beat Peter Buckley on the Jon Thaxton card.

National broadcast

This time his match against the Bolton boxer will be watched by a far bigger crowd, not just in the Docklands arena but on ITV as well.

"There will be millions watching, and thousands in the stadium of course, so it's the biggest fight I've ever been in," he said.

"I’m motivated already, I’ve just got to concentrate and get ready to do what I’ve got to do."

Which is to prepare for the big time, but Williams admits he has still some way to go.

"I don’t think it's really sunk in yet. The publicity hasn't really started yet, once it all starts then we can start moving forward," he said.

"For my career I think it's going to be good news in all different ways, PR-wise and with national coverage on TV, I’ll be all over the country. I just hope I put in a good performance and hopefully I’ll be able to win.

"I’ve got a good chance, I know he’s an awesome fighter, but I’m a fighter too and I’ve taken the opportunity and here we go... let’s get it on," he added.
