One recent mistake saw a German football stadium engraved on an Australian running medal.

What was the medal mix-up?

The Sydney Marathon is a running race in Australia. When each runner crosses the finish line on 30 August 2026, they will receive a special medal.
The medal shows famous Sydney sights, including the Opera House and Harbour Bridge... and a stadium from Munich, a city in Germany!
Sydney has a sports ground called Allianz Stadium, while Munich has one called Allianz Arena. Their names are similar, but the buildings look very different.
Organisers admitted that the wrong stadium had been engraved. A spokesperson said: "A little too much international flavour has found its way onto the back of the finishers medal, with an incorrect depiction of the stadium."
It was "an unfortunate error," they added.
The medals will not be replaced. Organisers joked, "We're not going to run from it," and said the medal was "beautiful" and "now a little more unique".
More mix-ups
At the 2017 Oscars, La La Land was announced as the winner of Best Picture. Speeches had already begun when the mistake was corrected. The film, Moonlight had actually won
Wrong city: Medals for the 2025 Great North Run, held in Newcastle and Gateshead, accidentally showed the nearby city of Sunderland and the River Wear. Neither was part of the race route.
Wrong film: At the 2017 Oscars, La La Land was announced as the winner of Best Picture. Speeches had already begun when the mistake was corrected. Moonlight had actually won, but the presenters had been given the wrong envelope.
The English is clear enough - but the Welsh reads "I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated."
Wrong flag: Before a women's football match at the London 2012 Olympics, North Korean players were shown on a giant screen beside South Korea's flag. The two countries have different flags, and don't get on. The players left the pitch, and the match started about an hour late. Organisers apologised for the error.
Wrong message: In Swansea in 2008, officials asked for Welsh words for a road sign. Instead, they accidentally printed a translator's automatic email reply. It read: "I am not in the office at the moment. Send any work to be translated." The sign was later removed.
