Woman taken to hospital after being hit by tram in Edinburgh

News imageBBC A city street scene cordoned off by emergency services on a sunny day. Blue-and-white police tape stretches across the foreground, blocking the road. Behind the tape, a marked police van with high-visibility red and yellow chevrons and the word “POLICE” is parked on the left, next to an ambulance response car with yellow and green markings. A modern tram in bright blue and pink livery is stopped on tracks running through the middle of the street.
The street is lined with multi-storey stone buildings featuring rows of windows, chimneys, and ground-floor shops, including signs such as “The Leith Walk Gallery” and “Greet the Ch…” (partially obscured). Overhead tram wires and poles run along the street. A few pedestrians are visible on the pavement behind the cordon, and some people can be seen further up the road near the emergency vehicles.
The sky is clear blue with scattered clouds, and strong sunlight casts long shadows across the pavement and road surface. Yellow road markings and tactile paving are visible in the foreground near the blocked crossing. The scene suggests an active incident with the area restricted for safety.BBC
Police were called to Leith Walk in Edinburgh on Sunday morning

A 19-year-old woman has been taken to hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a tram in Edinburgh.

Police closed a section of Leith Walk, between Albert Street and Pilrig Street, after emergency services were called to the incident at about 08:50.

The woman was taken to the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh. No-one else was injured.

Sgt Michael Thomson said: "Our inquiries are ongoing to establish the full circumstances and we are asking anyone who can help who has not already spoken to officers to get in touch."

The tramway was closed for hours while police investigated

Edinburgh Trams said it could only cover part of the route between Edinburgh Airport and St Andrews Square, and people could use their tickets on Lothian Buses between St Andrew Square and Newhaven in both directions.

The route returned to normal service at about 15:00 but Edinburgh Trams warned there could be extended wait times while the service resumed.

A spokesperson said: "We are currently working with emergency services following an incident on Leith Walk involving a tram this morning.

"We are unable to give any details at this time."
