A stadium in St Helier will be closed over the summer to allow for a refurbishment scheme to take place, the Government of Jersey has said.

The 30-year-old grandstand at Springfield Stadium is in need of an "essential refurbishment and upgrade" and it is hoped that the work will extend its life by a further 30 years.

Plans include repainting the steel framework, replacing glass side panels, improving the emergency lighting and repairing holes in the roof, with work to take place between June and September.

The government said the stand and pitch would be closed "for the duration of the project" but it was working with Jersey Bulls and Jersey Football Association to minimise disruption.

It said it hoped other facilities on site, including the cafe, gym and nursery, could remain open during the works and that the investment was "critical to maintaining the ongoing operation of the island's stadium".

The government added: "Recent condition reports and a detailed inspection have confirmed the need for these works to preserve the future of the facility."
