A large fire has broken out at a block of flats in Edinburgh.

Emergency services received reports of the blaze on Restalrig Road South at about 19:06.

The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service (SFRS) sent four engines and a specialist height team to the scene where they remain in attendance.

Police Scotland confirmed that the street was closed and road users were being advised to avoid the area.

The fire broke out in the roof of the flats shortly after 19:00 and spread throughout the building.

Dramatic images show huge clouds of white smoke engulfing the building and billowing into the sky.

It is understood the blaze is now under control. It is not known if there are any casualties.

Lothian Buses confirmed that a number of bus services had been diverted due to the incident.

A spokesperson said: "Due to a road closure, buses are unable to serve Restalrig Road South and Lochend Avenue and are instead diverted via Sleigh Drive in both directions until further notice."
