Musician Jacob Collier brings the beat to CBeebies Bedtime Stories with musical first
The acclaimed multi-instrumentalist swaps the stage for storytime with The Big-Time Boogie-Woogie Animal Band

Bedtime stories were a deep and foundational part of my childhood. They forged so much of the fabric of my inner world, and my relationship with the outer. When CBeebies asked if I might be open to read a story, I was so excited - and I knew I wanted to build a musical world around it.
Musician Jacob Collier is set to make CBeebies Bedtime Stories history, becoming the first reader to compose an original piece of music especially to accompany their story.
The singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, will read The Big-Time Boogie-Woogie Animal Band, written by Giles Andreae and illustrated by Nick East, to be broadcast on CBeebies on Friday 18 September at 6.50pm and available on BBC iPlayer.
Jacob’s specially composed piece will accompany his reading, bringing the musical world of the story to life for young viewers and their families.
The Big-Time Boogie-Woogie Animal Band follows a brilliant band of musical animals as they come together to make some noise, from a piano-playing polar bear to a cool koala on the saxophone.
Known for his musicianship and distinctive approach to creating and bringing sounds together, Jacob is the perfect storyteller for this joyful celebration of music, rhythm and finding your place in the band.
Jacob Collier said: “Bedtime stories were a deep and foundational part of my childhood. They forged so much of the fabric of my inner world, and my relationship with the outer. When CBeebies asked if I might be open to read a story, I was so excited - and I knew I wanted to build a musical world around it. I made sure that every animal and their instrument was represented within the cacophony of sounds - getting them all to work together was something of a challenge. I hope it sparks joy - it sure did for me!!”
Jacob joins the host of musicians who have settled down to share a story with young CBeebies viewers and their families, including Dolly Parton, Gregory Porter, Billie Eilish, Elton John, Jessie J, Harry Styles, Kylie Minogue, Mark Ronson and Robbie Williams.
Jacob Collier’s CBeebies Bedtime Story, The Big-Time Boogie-Woogie Animal Band, airs Friday 18 September at 6.50pm on CBeebies and will be available on BBC iPlayer.
