Franks a lot: David Threlfall

Shameless appeal

They stick together and they've got a big heart but for the Gallaghers, charity nearly always begins at home. Fortunately, the real cast of Shameless are a lot a more giving.

Manchester’s favourite dysfunctional family hit the streets today to raise money for the victims of flooding in South Asia.

Appeal: in St Ann's Square

Devastating floods have forced millions of people in India, Bangladesh and Pakistan to leave their homes seeking safety. Millions of children need food and shelter.

Led by David Threlfall - who plays drunken layabout Frank Gallagher - the actors of the hit Channel 4 series set in Manchester appeared in St Ann’s Square to rattle a few buckets on behalf of Save The Children UK.

Moved

The charity has recently launched a £2 million emergency appeal to supply clean water, food and shelter to children whose lives have been put in jeopardy.

"They need money, that’s the easiest thing. £10 will buy a tarpaulin they can sit under for temporary shelter; £85 can help them set up a health camp"

Speaking on BBC Radio Manchester this morning, David Threlfall said that, as an ambassador for the charity, he’d been particularly moved by the plight of 10 million children thought to be in danger.

“Forty per cent of the population are children and they need help like yesterday.
And there are very simple that things can help,” he said.

“For instance, rehydration sachets, the sort of thing we take for granted, only cost 2p a packet. I’ve seen people walk literally miles to get that basic help. And that’s the kind of thing that’s needed.”

“They need money, that’s the easiest thing. £10 will buy a tarpaulin they can sit under tonight for temporary shelter; £85 can help them set up a health camp.”

The cast of Shameless were in St Ann’s Square on Thursday 09 August. If you missed Frank and his bucket, you can still make donations on www.savethechildren.org.uk
