Getting to The Open

Travelling to the 135th Open Golf Championship? Here's a guide for getting to The Royal Liverpool Golf Club between Thursday 20th and Sunday the 23rd of July 2006.

The Open Championship will be held at Royal Liverpool Golf Club from Thursday 20th to Sunday the 23rd of July 2006. This will be the 135th Open and the 11th time the club has hosted what is arguably the greatest golf tournament in the world.

Travel Directions:

Royal Liverpool Golf Club is situated on Meols Drive (A540) between Hoylake and West Kirby, 10 minutes from Junction 2 of the M53 and less than 1 hour from Manchester International Airport.

Travelling by train

This is a preferred means for visitors to arrive at the Championship. Merseyrail provides a convenient and easy way to travel to the event at Hoylake.

Passengers travelling via Lime Street Station, Liverpool, will change on to the Merseyrail Wirral Line for trains to Hoylake / West Kirby. The golf course is a ten minute walk away from Hoylake Station.

During the Championship the normal 15-minute train service will be increased to a 10-minute service during peak morning and afternoon sessions. Trains will also have an increased number of carriages to meet demand.

More information on public transport in Merseyside is available by logging on to www.merseytravel.gov.uk or people can call Traveline on 0870 608 2608.

Travelling by road

Wirral is well placed with links to the national motorway network. Motorists travelling to the Championship will be advised to use designated routes that will be clearly signed by the AA.

To avoid congestion at any particular point, three motorway junctions on the M53 will be used to distribute the flow of traffic evenly during the Championship.

Traffic will be advised to take the following routes:

  • Travelling from the North - Exit the M6 at junction 26 and join the M58 heading to Liverpool. At the end of the M58 follow signs for the Wallasey Kingsway Tunnel. Take the Wallasey Kingsway Tunnel and join the M53 (signed North Wales and Chester).
  • Travelling from the East - From the end of the M62 in Liverpool follow signs for the Wallasey Kingsway Tunnel and join the M53 (signed North Wales and Chester)
  • Travelling from the South- Exit the M6 at junction 20a and join the M56 signed for Chester. Leave the M56 at junction 15 and join the M53 heading towards Birkenhead.
  • Travelling from North Wales - From the A55 join the M53 at junction 12 heading in the Ellesmere Port direction.

The R&A has organised official public park and ride sites. These are:

Heron Road car park

Traffic will be directed to this park and ride site via the M53 Junction 2, Moreton Spur, Upton Bypass, Saughall Massie Road, and Saughall Massie Bypass.

A bus service will then shuttle spectators to Royal Liverpool Golf Course heading via Birkenhead Road and Market Street to a drop off point in King's Gap.

Pump Lane car park

Traffic will be directed to this park and ride site via M53 Junction 3, Woodchurch Road, Arrowe Park Road, Upton Bypass and Greasby Road.

The bus service will operate along Saughall Massie Road, Black Horse Hill and Grange Road, stopping at a drop off point on Meols Drive. These buses will return along Frankby Road.
