Attracting wildlife to your garden

When the BBC Bus visited WWT Martin Mere in Burscough for BBC Autumnwatch we looked at all sorts of wildlife other than birds.

If you'd like to attract some interesting species to your garden, as well as create a more environmentally friendly area then check out this video.

BBC Lancashire reporter, Sue Hendey, has been speaking to Kate Greaves the Biodiversity Officer at the reserve - she deals with the monitoring and introduction schemes of the vulnerable and endangered plants and animals on site and she's got a few handy tips for you.

this year we have seen a redpoll. what a beauty ,it didnt stay long, but hopefully it will be back.also quite alot of goldfinches who come to feed on the niger seeds.when clearing our pond we came across three dragon flies that had climbed up the reeds ,but due to the lack of sun had failed to dry out their wings,so had just died.bluetits failed to hatch their eggs this year.lastly after nesting two years running the house martins didnt arrive this time, so sad.

Inspired by springwatch/autumnwatch a couple of year's ago I've put out seed/peanut feeders and I often put out fatballs or suet feeds. This has attracted around 15-20 sparrows that now nest in a nearby conifer tree,2 blue tits, 2 wood pigeons, 2 collared doves and a pair of blackbirds. Also had guest apearances from a pair of goldfinches and now there is a robin hanging around all these in a busy town centre.Just recently built and put up a sparrow suite but now there is bitter fighting between sparrows and blue tits for use of this.

I have a large amount of birds visiting daily now..They include house sparrows blue tits, great tits, coal tits, chaffinches, two goldfinch,2 magpies,2 doves, robin, sparrowhawk and its mess it leaves both sexes of blackbirds a wren and lots of greedy starlings and sadly pigeons which are a pain in the butt and i have to regularly shoo them away as if left they build in numbers and at one point i had over 75 and they are better hoovers than my vacuum cleaner ,also i have had a few visits from long tail tits ,greenfinches and along the way we have had a fighting cockeral :o (which we got a vet in for),a grey squirrel hedgehogs and a rat that was dealt with rather quickly (thank goodness) so for a very rural area close to a council estate this pleases me immensly and i get so excited when a new species of bird visits.

i have got two blue tits nesting in my garden, they have young in the nest box as i can hear them when the parents are coming back with food.I am worried that my dog will get the young when they start to leave the box as i have only got a small garden.Should i supervise my dog at all times or will the young blue tits manange to fly away if they are within reach of my dog?

I have been in my bungalow since last August, and have no small bird's, the only bird's I have are 2 blackbird's and load's of starling when I put food out for the blackbird's. I have put out nut's in bag's, a birdstand in a tree, and seed container's around my garden, and still no small bird's. My neighbour say's there isn't any bird's around here, and he's lived here 14 year's. What can I do to get bird's into my garden?I have alway's had bird's in my other homes.Thank you,

We put a bird box on our large ash tree a few weeks ago and this morning a blue tit is checking it out! How exciting. We have bluetits, greatits, greenfinches, sparrows, starlings, collared doves, wood pigeons, dunnocks, goldcrests, goldfinches, chaffinches, blackbirds, wrens, a one legged robin and his partner, magpies, a kestrel landed on my bird table and ate his lunch one day this was a dead mouse, kestrels overhead all the time, seagulls, a goshawk and woodpecker on occassions, the odd squirrel and hedgehog. Loads of frogs in our pond.We live about 5 mins walk from the beach.

My garden is just a small yard in the middle of the city, but I manage to atrract a wide range of birds to feed and nest. The feeding birds include chaffinches, house sparrows, starlings, jackdaws, collared doves, woodpigeons, wrens, robins, blackbirds, blue tits and great tits. The nesting birds include house sparrows, blue tits and great tits.

I see oyster catchers fly over my cottage, a weelittle baby robin bobbing about after scraps was in the front garden recently along with doves and bluetits and other little birds. I think people shud encourage wildlife/birds into their gardens and i have a tip, put your old washing up bowl in the garden/yard so birds can freely have a splash around in it or a free drink but of course fill it with water first

anne reid sough near kelbrook
