For one week every September Guernsey's skies are a-buzz with many different aircraft. ![]() Team Guniot's planes at Guernsey Airport From 201 Squadron's Nimrod, to the Black Cats helicopter display team, to a team of skydivers, 2009 was no exception. One new addition came in the form of Team Guinot who combine bi-plane aerobatics with human acrobatics on top of the wings! The team use Boeing Steadman bi-planes originally used to train American pilots during the Second World War. These though are modified "to have engines more than twice the size of the originals" according to Martyn Carrington, the team's director of flying. He continued to say that the team perform "formation aerobatics... to help demonstrate the aircraft and help the girls demonstrate their gymnastics on the wing". ![]() Stella and Danielle Those girls are Stella Gilding and Danielle Hughes who perform on the wings of the plane while they are in flight. Stella said, "It was something I'd always fancied trying... I've wanted to do it for a long time... I thought it would be the perfect job for me." While the performer is strapped to the wing in a special harness it still allows her enough movement to do gymnastics including handstands. These form part of one of their most dangerous stunts where one plane flies upside down above the other allowing the girls to join hands mid-flight! "It helps to have a gymnastic and dance background," Stella continued. "We'd like to do this forever".
