About This Event

Daniel Hyde (Director of Music, King’s College, Cambridge) returns to conduct the BBC Singers in a concert showcasing a wide variety of choral music from North America.

At the heart of the programme is Aaron Copland’s 1947 substantial choral work, In the beginning, which sets words from the biblical book of Genesis. Regarded as one of the finest choral works to come out of the United States in the 20th century, it is popular for its jazz and blues-like themes that run through the piece. Alongside works by celebrated contemporary composers Linthicum Blackhorse, a Lakȟóta Native American composer, Libby Larsen and Caroline Shaw, is Amy Beach’s beautiful setting of the American poet Sara Teasdale’s poem, Dusk in June.

Recorded for future broadcast on BBC Radio 3 and Sounds. Presented by Dr Flora Willson.
