Be a Secret Santa

In the week beginning Monday, 15 December 2008, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire will be partnering with local homelessness charities to encourage listeners to collect items for the homeless at this time of year.

With our Secret Santa project, we hope to raise awareness of local charities and to take time to think of others at Christmas.

Each day, BBC Coventry & Warwickshire's Fran Daly will be reporting live from the charities as part of the Breakfast Show and on Annie Othen's programme.

Every charity will be asking for different donations - whether it be blankets, towels or other useful items - so listen every day to hear what the charity would like you to donate.

You can also hear from a representative from the charities on Bob Brolly's afternoon programme and Vic Minett will also be reporting on the day's donations during her Teatime show.

Friday, 19 December

Fran visited Coventry Cyrenians. The charity provides accommodation for single homeless people. They have a referral and outreach service which can help people in need of emergency accommodation and also those with enquiries about benefits and more complicated housing issues. They provide short and long term housing for men, women and children. Coventry Cyrenians are appealing for volunteers with specific skills e.g. arts and crafts, photography, health and well being.

Address: Norton House, Bird Street, CV1 5FX (big yellow building opposite Swanswell Pool)

Contact number: 024 7622 1590

Thursday, 18 December

Fran visited Emmaus in Coventry. The charity offers homeless people a home, work and the chance to rebuild their lives in a supportive environment. The charity is keen to hear from people who can donate good quality furniture and household goods, which are then sold in Emmaus shops. They are appealing for single beds and mattresses, which don't have to be new, but need to be in a good clean condition and have a fire safety label. They also require voluntary assistance - drivers, shop workers, driver’s mates and people to provide admin support.

Drop off point for furniture: 70 Red Lane, Coventry CV6 5EQ (just off the Stoney Stanton Road, Thursday, Friday, Saturday Only)

Monday, 15 December

Fran was at Doorway in Bedworth. It is an independent charity working in North Warwickshire, enabling young homeless people aged 16 – 25 to secure and maintain appropriate accommodation.

The charity is looking for donations of gifts that go into Doorway’s Home Starter Packs - these include towels, crockery and duvets. These are given to each person moving into their first home.

You can find the charity and it's drop off point at: 20 High Street, Bedworth CV12 8NF
