The night sees a host of local bands appearing at Bunters in the city centre including Josie and the Lovecats and Hitchcock Rules. Broadcaster John Peel was the champion of British music for nearly 40 years on his late-night BBC Radio 1 show. He led the way in promoting new acts, from David Bowie, through Joy Division to the White Stripes. Peel's uncompromising encouragement of new talent transformed the face of music all the way from hippy to house. Right from the outset, Peel changed the rules. He played every track without interruption, to the delight of those wishing to tape his show, while providing a witty and knowledgeable running commentary, seemingly a million miles away from the transatlantic platitudes of many of his colleagues. ![]() Josie and the Love Cats In the early days Peel championed acts like Marc Bolan, David Bowie and Captain Beefheart, as he did throughout his career, by giving them studio-time to record legendary 'Peel sessions'. Five years after his death fans throughout the country are still 'Keeping it Peel' with the annual John Peel Day. Here in Cornwall Truro venue Bunters will be paying tribute to the legendary DJ with a collection of some of Cornwall's finest bands and solo acts. Chris Wilson organises the Cornwall event: "Cornwall is brimming with musical talent at the moment, and this is highlighted by this year's choice of bands. We've had to keep them different from last year obviously but this enforces just how much diversity and talent there is in the county." Acts appearing during the John Peel Day on Thursday 8 October include 21 year old Tom Cary who is being touted as one of Truro's most promising acts; Cornish trio Josie and the Lovecats; and crowd favourite Hitchcock Rules. The tribute to John Peel kicks off at 7pm on Thursday at Bunter's Bar in Truro.
