BBC News, coverage of a potential Labour leadership contest, May 2026

Summary of complaint

We received complaints from people who think our coverage of a potential Labour leadership contest has been excessive and biased against the prime minister.

Our response

The prime minister has come under intense pressure since Labour’s poor performance in the elections which took place in England, Scotland and Wales on 7th May, with growing expectations that he will face a leaderships challenge.  Who leads the country is clearly a matter of importance and it is appropriate that we have followed developments closely, offering detailed analysis of the potential consequences. We have reflected Sir Keir Starmers’s position throughout our coverage, explaining that there is currently no formal leadership contest taking place and the process involved.

We have reported on the nuanced range of views within the Labour Party, hearing from those both supportive and critical of the prime minister. This issue has led to members of the government resigning, with nearly 100 Labour MPs calling for Sir Keir to stand down. Former Health Secretary Wes Streeting not only resigned but also said he would challenge the prime minister, despite a contest not having yet begun.  It is fair that our analysis has reflected the divisions over the prime minister’s leadership that have been exposed.

During this period, we have continued to detail actions and proposals put forward by the government, notably the policies outlined in the King’s Speech.  We have also reported on what they would cite as their successes - unexpected growth in the economy in the first quarter of this year and falling NHS waiting times.

We approach stories relating to any political party with due impartiality, examining the issues at hand.  Given the significance of a Labour leadership contest being potentially triggered, we believe our coverage has been proportionate, scrutinising the many implications, and making clear the facts.  We will continue to apply these principles as this story develops.
