BBC News, concerns regarding footage of a donkey used in a news report, August 2026

Summary of complaint

We received complaints from people who felt that including footage of a donkey being dragged behind a vehicle during a report was unnecessarily distressing and inappropriate.

Our response

We appreciate that the footage of a donkey being dragged behind a vehicle was distressing to some viewers and we are sorry if the footage in the report caused you upset.

BBC News sometimes has to report on events that contain disturbing or distressing images. In doing so, our editorial teams are required to consider carefully whether the inclusion of such material is justified by the context of the story and to take particular care where this material is used. In this case, the footage was included to illustrate the nature of the events being reported on. We took care to limit the amount of footage that we did use, ending the shot before the situation became more distressing.

However, we recognise that distressing material can affect viewers differently and that some people may have found these images particularly difficult to watch.
