My Dad's The Prime Minister![]() Created by longstanding comedy partnership Ian Hislop and Nick Newman, this light-bite of political satire, starring Robert Bathurst, had a rather unusual genesis. Originally created as a children's show, it was told from the point-of-view of 12-year-old Dillon who is unfortunate enough to be the son of Prime Minister Michael Phillips. He finds life in Number 10 is no joke - his parents are too busy running the country to give him the time of day, the smallest of excursions requires a huge amount of planning and security and, worst of all, he's a figure of fun at school. ![]() To compensate, he often retreats into a fantasy world, where he's a tough Newsnight presenter, putting tricky questions to squirming grown-ups. First broadcast on the CBBC channel, it was then repeated on BBC One in a Sunday afternoon family slot. With Phillips clearly being a New Labour-style minister, topics such as spin-doctoring and political power games were all grist to the mill - making it an odd sort of children's show. When the series returned for a second run, the BBC realised it had the potential to appeal to a wider audience, and made it part of BBC One's Friday night comedy line-up. ![]() Alas, this slot - and the addition of a laughter track - left the gentle comedy a tad over exposed. No further episodes were ordered. Nevertheless, Bathurst has gone on record saying he felt the programme had further potential: "I think we could have easily done a third series. The things that are going on daily in Parliament at the moment would provide Ian and Nick with prime material." Cast
