When American G.I.s came to Britain
During the war, some food and clothing was so hard to come by that it was rationed (and some things weren't available at all)! So when America joined our side in the war and their soldiers arrived in Britain in 1942, they brought lots of things with them that we hadn't seen for years!
How was Britain involved in World War II?
On 3 September 1939, Britain declared war on Nazi Germany after German forces invaded Poland. During the war, British soldiers, sailors and airmen fought in different parts of the world, while people at home helped by working in factories, growing food and collecting supplies. One of the most famous events was the Battle of Britain in 1940, when the Royal Air Force (RAF) defended Britain against German air attacks. Many children were evacuated from towns and cities to the countryside to keep them safer from bombing raids. Families also experienced rationing, blackouts and other challenges as they supported the war effort. Britain later took part in the D-Day landings in June 1944, helping allied forces begin the liberation of Nazi-occupied Western Europe.
What is Remembrance Day?
Remembrance Day is an annual event when we honour the brave soldiers, veterans and people who lived through the First and Second World Wars. Every year on 11 November, people across the UK and other countries observe Remembrance Day by wearing red poppies, holding two minutes of silence and paying tribute to those who served and sacrificed so future generations could live in peace. World War II was a major global conflict that affected millions of people, including children and families. By learning about Remembrance Day, the history of World War II, the role of the armed forces and the importance of peace, we can understand the past and discover why we must remember the people who helped protect our freedom.
