It's an audio-visual installation and a radio play. The play ‘Rebel Woman’, is a specially-commissioned drama based around the true story of Queen Nanny and the Maroons (the name given to runaway slaves).
Queen Nanny was an 18th Century warrior who escaped from slavery in Jamaica and inspired hundreds of slaves to flee and join her fight for freedom against the British.
Accompanying the play is an audio-visual installation: photographs and interviews with many UK-based Afro-Caribbeans directly descended from Maroons. They feel their ancestors' resistance against slavery and ultimately winning their freedom from the British is something that needs to be celebrated. The installation will be on show in the reception of BBC Bristol on Whiteladies Road from 23-30 March, 2007 (open Monday to Friday 8.30am to 5.30pm). The multi-media project was part of the Roots project - a unique partnership between BBC and the Arts Council England.
