Celebrate locally at a BBC Big Screen

It's been an exciting few weeks for us in the Big Screens team across the UK.

Crowds convened in various locations to watch Euro 2012 games, and last week, matches from Wimbledon. One fixture saw BBC Big Screen manager Chris Nriapia filmed for a special series of videos for our colleagues in BBC Careers.

Many people who join us at one of the 22 screens up and down the country for a live broadcast comment on the great atmosphere. The communal experience is for many people often the best place to celebrate such TV events locally.

Wimbledon is being broadcast on all of the BBC Big Screens every day of the tournament. At selected screen sites during the finals' weekend, there will also be an opportunity to pick up a racquet and test your skills on temporary courts, with tennis experts on hand to offer tips.

Watch amazing events with @BBCBigScreens

Editor's note: Stephen Morgan, Screen Manager for BBC Big Screens blogs about an exciting summer of events available to watch across the country.

BBC Big Screens are proud to be at the heart of national celebrations and will play a key role in the BBC's delivery of the Olympic Games. The screens are part of the official London 2012 Live Sites programme and deliver the experience promised in the London 2012 bid - to engage with as many people as possible. During the Olympics, up to 500,000 people per day are expected to celebrate the Games at Live Sites throughout the country.

The BBC Big Screen Swansea

We look after 22 screens, which are dotted across the UK, in every nation and region. It's a partnership between London 2012, local authorities and the BBC. And it doesn't matter whether you're looking forward to the men's 10,000 metre final or prefer the women's long-jump final, the BBC Big Screens will be the best destination to watch the Games locally.

From Swansea to Swindon, Belfast to Birmingham and Derry to Dover, BBC Big Screens will offer extensive coverage of the Olympic and Paralympic Games, with comfortable seating and facilities to ensure audiences have a fantastic shared experience. We want people to choose to watch the world's greatest event with us.

It's been terrific to see the amazing pictures of the Olympic Torch Relay. Huge crowds are watching the live coverage and the torch will be visiting every Big Screen site to give people a front-row view.

It's always a pleasure to talk to members of the public at our events and people tell us they really enjoy coming along to soak up the atmosphere. With world-class content from the BBC, our open-air screens provide an amazing experience - it's an atmosphere you just can't get at home. It's not all about sport. With a packed programme of dazzling events, it really does promise to be a summer like no other.

One of my favourites is The Queen's Diamond Jubilee concert. It's likely to be very popular as more than 1.2m applications were made for the concert at Buckingham Palace - with only 10,000 tickets up for grabs. Other highlights include live coverage of Radio 1's Hackney Weekend and Euro 2012 games at selected sites.

Visit our website for the latest events in your area and watch a selection of Big Screen events. Follow us on Facebook and Twitter @bbcbigscreens

We look forward to welcoming you to one of our BBC events, soon.

A Big Year for Big Screens

I was very pleased to hear about the Royal Engagement and am sure people will love watching the Royal Wedding on our Big Screens. People tell us, time after time, that they enjoy coming together to share an experience with others who have a common interest. Even when events such as rugby and football games are available on television, there's nothing quite like the atmosphere you get as part of a crowd.

Back in the Summer I was telling you about some of our Big Screen events and our partnership with London 2012 and local authorities. But it doesn't stop there. We're constantly developing new partnerships in local communities. The screen is a digital community canvas. One example of a recent collaboration is with the National Screen and Sound Archive of Wales. We're able to showcase some really fascinating stuff. Viewers watching Big Screen Cardiff can now see footage of the city centre in the 1930s and 1970s. How things have changed! Everything seemed to be displayed in the shop windows in those days. For the locals, going back in time with the Big Screen, is a fascinating journey. The films revisit parts of Cardiff which have been totally transformed, including the old Tiger Bay, made famous by Dame Shirley Bassey. Around a third of the Big Screen’s airtime is dedicated to local films, made by local people. You may have seen recent pictures of Swansea, marking Armistice Day, on UK television news. The Royal British Legion returned to the city for the second time to host Silence in the Square. Its sister event at Trafalgar Square is now in its fourth year. Both events were integrated, via the Big Screen.

The audience enjoyed performances by The Saturdays, local singers and Sarah Lark, finalist of BBC's I'd Do Anything. It was a very moving experience and after total silence fell on the square, people placed poppies in the fountain. It was a poignant scene.

I'm always amazed how people of all ages react to our interactive games shown on screen. It's fascinating to watch the reaction of people as the screen often stops them in their tracks. Using a motion-sensitive camera, audiences are thrilled to see themselves on city centre screens, responding to the demands of the games. I must tell you about our recent Children in Need Big Screen Quiz in Cardiff. People watched short television clips and answered questions based around magical moments from Children in Need.

There were 4 possible answers for every question, each represented by a box on screen. You then had to stand within the relevant box to register your answer. Cardiff played against big screens in the other nations, with competitors based at Norwich, Edinburgh and Derry.

You only have to look at people's faces to realise they were having fun. As well as playing games on screens we've been able to give students a platform to develop their own games and interactive ideas.
People love taking part in our events and enjoy watching others appearing on screen. We recently hosted a Strictly Come Dancing event in Swansea, giving locals a chance to take to the dance floor. Karen Hardy recorded a special dance routine for the Big Screen, which people were able to perfect on the ground. Local dance experts also stepped in to delight the crowds.

This leads us nicely into the Christmas season. Festive favourites for me will include concerts by the BBC National Orchestra and Chorus of Wales, including Carols for Christmas at St David's Hall. These will all be shown live on the Big Screen, with highlights peppered into our daily schedules.

Have you been to any of our events? Let us know what you think.

Stephen Morgan is Screen Manager for Wales

Big Screens - the next big thing

It's always refreshing to get out of the office and meet people. In my job, as a Screen Manager in Wales, with the Big Screens project, there's never a dull moment. Big Screens are becoming city centre meeting points. In Cardiff alone, 200,000 people walk past the screen every week. That's a lot of people. During our events I get to stop and talk to our audiences. We chat about what they enjoy and I jot down all the feedback. It's a good way to fine-tune our plans. From meeting locals, tourists and special visitors like the Archbishop of Canterbury, you can't ask for more variety.

Let me tell you more about the project. It's a BBC partnership with London 2012 and local authorities. I look after Swansea and Cardiff but Big Screens are located across the UK. As well as news, sports and weather from the BBC, there's a good mix of local stuff, made by local people. Archive content, films, animations and pictures. Who can be a part of it? Anyone can, as long as it fits in with our editorial guidelines. Artists, students, school children and people of all ages. They love to see their work showcased in a public space. The Big Screens are there for the community to use and we make sure the content is suitable for everyone.

Local films are complemented by the latest information from the organisers of the London Olympics. 2012 is going to be fantastic. I can't wait. As well as planning for the Games, there's so much else to think about as well. The Torch Relay, the Queen's Diamond Jubilee, Euro 2012, Six Nations, US Masters Golf. The list goes on. Royal Wedding?!

Every event is meticulously planned and I get to see each one through from start to finish.

It was great to be part of a wonderful Doctor Who event in June. Cybermen and a Dalek stormed Cardiff city centre as Doctor Who's latest online game was premiered on the Big Screen, before it was released to the general public. In another Doctor Who event in Swansea, we handed out 7000 pairs of 3D glasses, enabling fans to enjoy a special preview of the new series.

Our BBC Dig In event inspired people to grow their own veg. Chris Collins, the Blue Peter gardener, was on hand to help with any gardening troubles. We distributed 6000 packets of seeds.

In the run-up to the General Election, we hosted an interactive BBC News event and the Big Screen in Cardiff was recently featured on Tonight's the Night, BBC One. It was used to reveal one of the surprises on John Barrowman's programme. It was a dream come true for two people from Bridgend.

We often work long days, but even when you've been on your feet all day, seeing the audience having a really good time makes it all worthwhile. It's very satisfying. People tell me they appreciate free events, and enjoy coming together to soak up the atmosphere. The World Cup was not an exception. Although it was available on television, the Big Screen proved to be a big attraction. In Swansea we had around 1500 watching England play but in Leeds they had crowds of up to 9000 and in Leicester around 7.000 regularly. "It's so much better outside," said one of the viewers.

We're all different but enjoy meeting up to share a common interest. It could be exclusive coverage of a BBC National Orchestra of Wales concert, Wimbledon, a live relay from the Royal Opera House, a local graduation ceremony or a world premiere of a short film created by local school children. We've got it all covered. Something for everyone.

I'll share some more summer highlights with you next time. In the meantime we look forward to watching the Last Night of the Proms on the Big Screens on September 11.

Stephen Morgan is the BBC's Screen Manager for Wales

For more information about BBC Big Screens, go to bbc.co.uk/bigscreens
