What does Creative, Digital, Simple, Open mean for us?

The launch of our Creative Future, including Creative Future Journalism , is an important moment for everyone in the BBC, including all of us in Global News.

Creative Future will deliver on our commitments in Building Public Value, including building global value . It is at the heart of how we will continue to build a relationship and connect with our audiences and customers around the world and in the UK.

It's about how we meet the challenges from new technologies in an 'on demand' world, how audiences are changing, what they're looking for and what the BBC needs to do in response. It's about being the world's most creative media organisation in our journalism, and across other genres from comedy, entertainment and drama, to music, sport, factual and knowledge building. It's about how we go beyond broadcast into a digital 'on demand' future in everything we do.

And it's all about changing, around the four big themes that Mark Thompson has talked about, a BBC which is Creative, Digital, Simpler and more Open. These will become central to our plans and to our own creative future in Global News.

So, what do these BBC themes – Creative, Digital, Simple and Open – mean for us?

  • Creative: Global News will strive to be the most creative multi-platform, multi-lingual content provider, offering the best journalism in the world.

  • Digital: Global News will serve its audiences, customers and stakeholders, around the world and in the UK. Our different audiences have different needs. We will be an organisation that uses digital production and delivery techniques, from beginning to end. And we will make sure we deliver what our audiences want, when they want it, how they want it (in a way that is the most convenient and immediate for them).

  • Simple: Global News aims to be a confident, self-reliant place, with minimum bureaucracy, where everyone takes ownership of their creative, leadership and management responsibilities. We will minimise complexity, avoid duplication and commit to using the smallest number of people to get the job done, so that we can invest more into delivering the world's best news services.

  • Open: Externally, Global News will be more focused on and relevant to our audiences, customers and stakeholders, wherever they are in the world. Internally, we will work together to become more collaborative, across the division and across the BBC, helping each other, sharing content and information.
These principles are important ones to the BBC and to all of us in Global News.
